You can check the links from Google (link:http://www.domain.com) or from Yahoo site explorer. If you want to be high on Google ranks You should focus on Google links instead of Yahoo.

At the end everybody is responsible for their own acts, but you shouldn't be so afraid of link building. It's an important part of good SEO.
